To be selected for one of our high school student exchange programmes you need to be:
- Aged between 14 and 18
- A full-time student
- A New Zealand citizen or resident
AFS Selection Events occur at three main times during the year.
Although you are welcome to apply all year round we encourage you to keep to the following application dates in 2010 for departure in 2011:
- 1st Friday in March (to be considered during April AFS selections)
- Last Friday in May (to be considered during July AFS selections)
- 1st Friday in August (to be considered during September AFS selections)
- Applications for 2010 have closed for countries which have departure dates at the beginning of 2011, however, there are a limited number available for our fast track process for those countries which have departure dates from the mid year onwards

AFS year programme (academic year): Enjoy the ultimate AFS experience and fully integrate yourself into another culture, as you live with a host family and attend a local school as a full time student.

AFS semester programme (5-6 months): You will still gain an intensive inside view of another country and language as you attend a local school as a full-time student. (Please note this programme cannot be extended to one year.)

AFS Intensive Programme (up to 3 months): Use your existing language skills in real life situations as you live with a host family and attend a local school. This programme is great for students who want an authentic overseas experience, but are unable to take a long term break from their studies or other commitments. The majority of intensive programme departures occur during the New Zealand summer holidays.
