What does the fee include?

Why do I need to pay in order to volunteer?

AFS, a non-profit, volunteer based organisation, charges a service fee to cover our year-round coordination and operational costs, which include AFS volunteer training, local and overseas orientation activities and emergency assistance, as well as regular contact and coordination with the community service organisation. Part of the fee also goes to the AFS partner organisation in the host country, where similar coordination and operational costs are incurred.

How far in advance should I apply?

Programmes tend to fill up quickly and places on certain programmes are very limited. Applications should be received at least three months prior for the three month programmes and at least six months prior for the six month programmes. This not only gives you time to prepare for your trip, it also gives AFS time to obtain the necessary visa and flight arrangements plus find you the most suitable family and programme.

I don’t have any foreign language experience. How will I be able to communicate?

Many participants start off with little host country language experience. But before long they are able to communicate at a basic level, and a lot of our participants are fluent by the end of the programme. Some programmes also offer language tuition. We strongly advise that you begin tuition as soon as you have been guaranteed a place in your host country. Of course there is no better way to learn a language than by speaking it 24/7!

I’m over 25, is there a programme for me?

There are a number of programmes that are suitable for adults of all ages. Check Countries & Projects for detailed information and age criteria. On request most AFS partners will also tailor a programme to suit you. Contact AFS on 0800 600 300 for more information.

Where will I live?

You will be placed with a carefully-screened local family. Your family will provide you with everyday needs, including all meals and accommodation. Depending on your country of choice, your family may not have all of the luxuries we have in New Zealand, but you can be sure of your host family’s love and support.
